Oh Comrade, Where art thou? After reading 1984 by George Orwell for the second time in my British Fiction class here at CAPA, I noticed a strong connection between the issues regarding technology in the novel and the reality of technology in our everyday. As an English major, I am very interested in the accuracy of Orwell’s seemingly sardonic predictions regarding surveillance and its effects on the human psyche. The reactions of individuals today under extensive observation equivocates the reaction of characters such as Julia and Winston described by Orwell. One this Wiki, I plan to display research supporting the hypothesis that “Big Brother”exists in 2009. I also plan to explore the anxiety of constant surveillance on the individual, and the resulting inefficiency of those who feel constant paranoia. In addition, I will also evaluate the accuracy of Orwell’s psychological descriptions and the predictions he subtly presents through his work.
